This investigational allogeneic cell therapy consists of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) and is being developed by Fu-Sheng Wang and colleagues at the Fifth Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital. The therapy is specifically targeted toward HIV-infected immune non-responders (INRs)—patients who fail to achieve adequate CD4+ T cell recovery despite maintaining viral suppression through long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART). UC-MSCs possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which are utilized to counteract the chronic immune activation and systemic inflammation that drive T cell depletion in these patients. By modulating the immune environment, the therapy aims to facilitate the restoration of CD4+ T cell counts and improve overall immune function. It has been evaluated in a Phase 2 multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT01213186).
