This combination therapy consists of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) and anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG). UC-MSCs are multipotent stromal cells known for their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, which are thought to help repair and support the bone marrow microenvironment. ATG is a potent immunosuppressive agent that works by depleting T-lymphocytes, which are primarily responsible for the autoimmune destruction of hematopoietic stem cells in aplastic anemia. The combination is specifically being evaluated by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for the treatment of children with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) to improve early response rates and long-term therapeutic outcomes compared to standard ATG treatment alone.
