Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) is an investigational cell therapy being developed by The Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine for the treatment of severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants. The therapy involves the intratracheal administration of allogeneic MSCs harvested from human umbilical cord tissue (Wharton's jelly). These cells are hypothesized to exert therapeutic effects through paracrine mechanisms, secreting various growth factors and immunomodulatory cytokines that reduce lung inflammation, promote alveolarization, and improve pulmonary vascular development. This treatment aims to improve the survival rate and long-term respiratory outcomes for extremely preterm infants at high risk for chronic lung disease.
