Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) are an allogeneic cell therapy developed by A.O. Ospedale Papa Giovanni XXIII for the treatment of severe, steroid-resistant acute graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). These multipotent cells possess potent immunomodulatory properties, functioning by suppressing the activation and proliferation of various immune effector cells, such as T cells and natural killer cells, while promoting the activity of regulatory T cells. In clinical development, these cells are being evaluated for their safety and efficacy when administered intravenously, often as part of a sequential treatment regimen following other immunosuppressive agents like pentostatin, to manage the systemic inflammatory response in patients who have failed first-line corticosteroid therapy.
