Overview

Umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells derived from the Wharton's jelly or other tissues of the umbilical cord. These cells possess the ability to self-renew and differentiate into various mesodermal lineages, including bone, cartilage, and fat cells. UC-MSCs are characterized by their low immunogenicity and potent immunomodulatory properties, making them suitable for allogenic transplantation without the need for rigorous HLA matching. In the context of dental and periodontal medicine, UC-MSCs are being investigated for their regenerative potential to reconstruct deficient interdental papilla and treat gingival recession. The University of Malaya has conducted clinical research evaluating the efficacy of these cells when locally injected to promote tissue regeneration in the oral cavity.
