Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational allogeneic cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of severe COVID-19 pneumonia and associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). These multipotent cells possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. When administered intravenously, UC-MSCs tend to sequester in the lungs, where they can mitigate the "cytokine storm" by inhibiting the TNF-α pathway and modulating the activity of various immune cells, including T cells, B cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages. This action helps to protect alveolar epithelial cells, reduce inflammation-induced lung injury, and potentially prevent pulmonary fibrosis. Fuzhou General Hospital has conducted early-phase clinical research to assess the safety and efficacy of these cells in patients with severe respiratory complications from COVID-19.
