This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic human umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) being evaluated for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Developed by Allergy and Asthma Consultants in Wichita, Kansas, under the leadership of Dr. Van Strickland, the therapy utilizes the regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells to address the progressive muscle degeneration characteristic of DMD. In 2014, it received FDA approval as the first investigational allogeneic stem cell treatment for Duchenne's in the United States, specifically for a Phase 1 single-patient compassionate use study. The treatment protocol involves multiple intramuscular injections administered on consecutive days, repeated every six months over a three-year period, with the goal of leveraging paracrine signaling and cellular interaction to promote muscle repair and reduce inflammation.
