Expanded umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) are an allogeneic cell therapy being developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis. These multipotent stem cells are derived from umbilical cord tissue and expanded in vitro to reach therapeutic concentrations. Administered via intravenous infusion, UCMSCs are hypothesized to exert potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. The therapeutic rationale centers on the cells' ability to migrate to inflamed tissues and modulate the immune microenvironment, specifically by suppressing the overactive Th1 and Th17 T-cell responses and reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that drive the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
