Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (ucMSCs) developed by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in India are an investigational cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of non-viral acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). These cells are harvested from umbilical cord tissue and processed within a cGMP-compliant facility. The therapy is designed to promote native liver regeneration and provide a transplant-free treatment option for patients with ACLF, a condition with high mortality and limited donor organ availability. The mechanism of action involves the immunomodulatory and regenerative properties of MSCs, which can migrate to the site of liver injury, secrete trophic factors to reduce inflammation, and stimulate the repair of damaged hepatic tissue.
