Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) from the Instituto de Medicina Regenerativa are an investigational cell therapy derived from the Wharton's Jelly of the umbilical cord. These cells are expanded in vitro under hypoxic conditions, which is intended to enhance their therapeutic potential. Administered via intravenous infusion, the therapy is primarily being evaluated for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in patients with COVID-19. The mechanism of action involves the secretion of various paracrine factors that exert potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. These factors aim to attenuate the systemic hyperinflammatory response, often referred to as a cytokine storm, and facilitate the repair of damaged alveolar tissue in the lungs.
