Overview

This investigational cell therapy, developed by Qingdao University, consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue (UC-MSCs). It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials (notably NCT01216865) for the treatment of diabetic foot and critical limb ischemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. The therapy is administered via intramuscular injection directly into the ischemic limb. The primary therapeutic mechanism involves the promotion of angiogenesis and the enhancement of local blood circulation, which facilitates the healing of chronic ulcers, alleviates severe ischemic pain, and aims to prevent the need for limb amputation. The cells undergo rigorous safety evaluations, including karyotype analysis and testing for pathogenic microorganisms, prior to administration.
