Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) are a type of multipotent stem cell being developed by the South China Research Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine for the treatment of articular cartilage defects and knee osteoarthritis. These cells are harvested from the umbilical cord tissue and possess the ability to differentiate into various lineages, including chondrocytes, which are essential for cartilage repair. Beyond direct differentiation, UCMSCs exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling, secreting a variety of cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles that modulate the immune response, reduce local inflammation, and stimulate endogenous tissue repair mechanisms within the joint. This specific cell therapy is being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to determine its safety and efficacy in regenerating damaged cartilage and improving functional outcomes in patients with degenerative joint diseases.
