Overview

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (ucMSCs) developed by the Universidad de los Andes and its spin-off company Cells for Cells (C4C) is an investigational allogeneic cell therapy for the treatment of heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy. The therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from human umbilical cord tissue, which are administered via intravenous infusion. These cells are hypothesized to exert therapeutic effects through paracrine mechanisms, secreting immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and pro-angiogenic factors that promote cardiac tissue repair, reduce myocardial fibrosis, and improve ventricular function. The therapy was evaluated in the Phase 1/2 RIMECARD clinical trial, which demonstrated that intravenous infusion of ucMSCs was safe and resulted in significant improvements in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and functional capacity in patients with stable heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
