Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational cell-based therapy developed by Indonesia University (Universitas Indonesia) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction secondary to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Administered via intracavernosal injection, these multipotent stem cells exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling, releasing growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). These factors promote angiogenesis, endothelial cell proliferation, and tissue regeneration within the corpus cavernosum, thereby improving penile blood flow. The therapy has been evaluated in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial to assess its efficacy in regenerating functionally damaged penile tissue and improving clinical outcomes in diabetic patients, often in conjunction with daily tadalafil.
