UC-MSCs-ZhiYong Peng-COVID-19 pneumonia refers to an investigational cell therapy utilizing allogeneic umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) for the treatment of severe and critical COVID-19 pneumonia. Developed by Dr. Zhiyong Peng and his team at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, the therapy is administered intravenously to leverage the cells' innate immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. The primary mechanism involves the mitigation of the systemic hyperinflammatory state, often referred to as a "cytokine storm," by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-6) and promoting an anti-inflammatory environment. Clinical results from Phase 2 pilot studies have demonstrated the safety of this approach and suggested potential benefits in improving oxygenation, reducing lung pathology, and lowering mortality rates in critically ill patients.
