This combination therapy consists of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) and liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Developed by the Diabetes Care Center of Nanjing Military Command (also known as Fuzhou General Hospital), the treatment is being investigated for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The rationale for the combination is that UC-MSCs provide immunomodulatory effects and can potentially differentiate into insulin-producing cells, while liraglutide stimulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion and may enhance the survival and differentiation of the transplanted stem cells. Together, they aim to protect residual beta-cell function and improve glucose homeostasis more effectively than monotherapy.
