Overview

A biologic cell therapy consisting of allogeneic, cryopreserved mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from human umbilical cord tissue. Developed and manufactured by Emory University for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, these cells are processed to passage 2 (P2) and administered as a single intra-articular injection of 20 million cells in a 4 mL volume. The therapy was evaluated in the MILES trial (NCT03818737), a multicenter Phase 2/3 study comparing various MSC preparations (bone marrow, adipose, and umbilical cord) to corticosteroid injections. While the cells demonstrated a favorable safety profile with no serious treatment-related adverse events, trial results published in Nature Medicine in 2023 indicated that the UCT MSCs were not superior to corticosteroid injections in reducing pain at the one-year primary endpoint.
