Overview

Umbilical cord Wharton's jelly-derived human mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSC) is an investigational cell therapy developed by Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP). These cells are harvested from the Wharton's jelly of the human umbilical cord and are characterized by their high production of bioactive molecules and potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties. The therapy is primarily being evaluated for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), specifically in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection. By modulating the immune response and reducing pulmonary inflammation, UC-MSCs aim to improve oxygenation and accelerate recovery in critically ill patients. The cells can be scaled up into cryopreserved banks for ready availability and have demonstrated a favorable safety profile in clinical settings.
