Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Alprostadil is a synthetic variant of Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) that acts as a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation. Marketed by Sunshine Mandi Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of 3SBio) under the brand name Unodil, this specific formulation is a liposomal injection designed to enhance drug stability and therapeutic efficacy by protecting the active ingredient from rapid metabolism in the lungs. It works by binding to prostaglandin E (EP) receptors, which activates adenylate cyclase and increases intracellular cAMP levels, leading to smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic arterial occlusive diseases, such as thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) and arteriosclerosis obliterans, and is used to improve microcirculation in patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications.
