Drug intelligence / Profile preview
untargeted BPEI-SPION + Bcl-xL siRNA is a research-stage, non-targeted nanoparticle-siRNA complex consisting of branched polyethyleneimine-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (BPEI-SPION) complexed with small interfering RNA (siRNA) directed against Bcl-xL, an anti-apoptotic protein overexpressed in many cancers. Unlike its targeted counterpart (IL-4R-targeted BPEI-SPION + Bcl-xL siRNA), this formulation lacks any tumor-homing ligand and was used as a control/comparator in preclinical research. Its active ingredient is Bcl-xL siRNA, and its biological target is the Bcl-xL gene/protein, a key regulator of apoptosis. The modality is a nucleic acid-based nanomedicine (siRNA delivered via polymeric iron oxide nanoparticles). It has been studied in the context of breast cancer (specifically MDA-MB231 cells) in combination with doxorubicin chemotherapy. There is no brand name, no approved indication, and no identified commercial developer — it appears solely as a research/experimental comparator compound described in a 2017 academic publication (Biomaterials, ScienceDirect), with researchers affiliated with academic institutions (including Kyungpook National University School of Medicine, South Korea).
