UQ-CSL V451 was a COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the University of Queensland in collaboration with CSL and Seqirus. It utilized a recombinant protein subunit platform featuring a "molecular clamp" technology designed to stabilize the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in its pre-fusion conformation, thereby enhancing the immune response. The vaccine was formulated with the MF59 adjuvant, an oil-in-water emulsion. Development was halted in December 2020 during Phase 1 clinical trials after it was discovered that the molecular clamp (derived from HIV-1 gp41) induced antibodies that caused false-positive results on some HIV diagnostic tests, although no HIV infection was present.
