Overview
VA-MENGOC-BC is a bivalent meningococcal vaccine developed by the Finlay Vaccine Institute in Cuba. It is the world's first vaccine against serogroup B meningococcal disease, developed in 1989. The vaccine is composed of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) — specifically proteoliposomes — from Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B, combined with meningococcus C capsular polysaccharide, making it effective against both serogroup B and serogroup C meningococcal disease. It is adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide to enhance the immune response. VA-MENGOC-BC has been used extensively in Latin America and other regions, with over 60 million doses administered, and has been incorporated into national immunization programs in multiple countries to control meningococcal epidemics.
