Overview

Vacc-C5 + GM-CSF is a combination therapeutic vaccine candidate for HIV infection. Vacc-C5 consists of synthetic peptides derived from the C5 region of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120/gp41, designed to induce non-neutralizing antibodies that may help control immune activation and slow disease progression in people living with HIV. The rationale is based on observations that long-term non-progressors (LTNPs) have higher levels of anti-C5 antibodies, which are associated with slower disease progression. Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is used as an adjuvant to enhance immune responses by promoting dendritic cell maturation and antigen presentation. In clinical studies, this combination was administered intradermally or intramuscularly in patients on antiretroviral therapy to assess safety and immunogenicity. Results showed that the vaccine was safe but induced only marginal humoral and cellular immune responses; however, it did increase T cell regulation[2][3][1]. The developer Bionor Pharma has explored its use both as a therapeutic intervention for chronically infected patients at risk of immune collapse and as a preventive vaccine for high-risk populations[2].
