Overview
Valaciclovir and aciclovir are both antiviral medications used to treat herpes virus infections. Valaciclovir is a prodrug of aciclovir, meaning it's converted to aciclovir in the body after administration. Both medications inhibit viral DNA synthesis after phosphorylation to the active triphosphate form, and are effective against various herpes viruses including HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV, CMV, and EBV.
