Overview
Nervikán is a herbal medicinal product developed by Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co. KG and marketed by its subsidiary, Schwabe Farma Ibérica. It is a fixed-dose combination of valerian root extract (*Valeriana officinalis*) and lemon balm leaf extract (*Melissa officinalis*). The product is indicated for the relief of temporary sleep disturbances and symptoms of mild nervous tension or anxiety. Its pharmacological action is primarily mediated through the modulation of the GABAergic system. Valerian components, such as valerenic acid, act as positive allosteric modulators of GABA-A receptors and inhibit the enzymatic breakdown of GABA. Lemon balm components, including rosmarinic acid, further enhance GABA levels by inhibiting 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase (GABA transaminase). Together, these mechanisms increase inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system, resulting in sedative and anxiolytic effects.
