Overview

Valproate + divalproex refers to the combination use of two closely related drugs: valproate (which describes several salt forms including valproic acid and sodium valproate) and divalproex (a coordinated compound of sodium valproate and valproic acid, also known as valproate semisodium). Both are antiepileptic and mood-stabilizing agents commonly prescribed for treatment of epilepsy, prevention of migraine, and management of bipolar disorder. Their mechanism includes increased availability of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, blockage of voltage-gated sodium channels, and inhibition of histone deacetylases. Both agents carry significant risks, especially teratogenicity and hepatotoxicity, and are contraindicated in pregnancy and pre-existing liver disease[2][3].
