Valsartan + levoamlodipine is a fixed-dose combination therapy consisting of the angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) valsartan and the calcium channel blocker (CCB) levoamlodipine, specifically the (S)-enantiomer of amlodipine. Developed by Jiangxi Shimei Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., this combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of hypertension. Valsartan works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland, leading to vasodilation and reduced aldosterone secretion. Levoamlodipine, the pharmacologically active isomer of amlodipine, inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle by blocking L-type calcium channels, resulting in peripheral arterial vasodilation. The combination provides synergistic blood pressure lowering effects with potentially fewer side effects, such as peripheral edema, compared to racemic amlodipine.
