Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination of two antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic primarily used to treat severe bacterial infections, particularly those caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall assembly. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that is often combined with clavulanic acid to treat various bacterial infections. When used together, vancomycin and β-lactam antibiotics (like amoxicillin) have shown synergistic effects against methicillin-resistant staphylococci. This combination can be more effective than either antibiotic alone, particularly against strains with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides. In clinical practice, this combination might be used for serious infections such as endocarditis caused by resistant staphylococcal strains. Research in rabbit models of experimental endocarditis has shown that the combination of vancomycin with β-lactams (specifically nafcillin in the study) resulted in significant reductions in bacterial counts compared to either agent alone. The dosing of these antibiotics would typically follow standard guidelines for each individual drug. This combination represents an important therapeutic strategy for managing difficult-to-treat resistant bacterial infections, particularly when standard monotherapy approaches may be insufficient.
