Vancomycin + ceftazidime is a combination of two antibiotics frequently used together for the empirical treatment of severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients (such as neutropenic children) and for intravitreal injection in cases of infectious endophthalmitis. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus of peptidoglycan precursors, thereby blocking transglycosylation and weakening the bacterial cell wall, especially in Gram-positive bacteria[6]. Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-negative bacteria. The combination provides coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms[2][3][4][5]. This regimen is recommended as first-line empiric therapy for serious infections where both types of pathogens are suspected, such as febrile neutropenia or endophthalmitis[2][3][7].
