Vancomycin + tobramycin-impregnated calcium sulfate beads is an investigational local antibiotic delivery system being studied by McMaster University for the prevention of surgical site infections (SSI) in high-risk vascular surgery patients. The system utilizes Stimulan Rapid Cure, a pharmaceutical-grade, biodegradable calcium sulfate matrix, to deliver high concentrations of vancomycin and tobramycin directly into surgical wounds, such as groin incisions. The beads are designed to be fully absorbable over a period of 30 to 60 days, providing sustained antimicrobial activity at the site of potential infection while minimizing systemic toxicity. This approach is particularly targeted at patients undergoing vascular procedures where the risk of SSI is significantly elevated.
