Overview
Varilrix is a live attenuated vaccine developed by GSK for the prevention of varicella (chickenpox). It contains the Oka strain of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is attenuated through serial passage in human diploid cell cultures. The vaccine is indicated for active immunization in healthy individuals, typically starting from 9 to 12 months of age, and is also utilized in high-risk populations such as autologous stem cell transplant recipients to prevent severe varicella infection. Varilrix works by inducing both humoral (antibody-mediated) and cellular immune responses against VZV, providing long-term protection against the disease. It is available in several formulations, including a human serum albumin (HSA)-free version.
