Overview
Varicella Virus, Live Attenuated is a live attenuated vaccine developed by Sinovac (Dalian) Vaccine Technology, a subsidiary of Sinovac Biotech, for the prevention of varicella (chickenpox). The vaccine is based on the Oka strain of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is inoculated into human diploid cells (specifically the SV-1 strain), cultured, harvested, stabilized, and freeze-dried. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce specific antibodies and cellular immunity against VZV. The vaccine received drug registration approval from China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) and achieved WHO prequalification in 2022. Clinical development has included Phase IV trials evaluating long-term antibody persistence after a single primary dose and the safety and immunogenicity of booster doses administered 1, 2, or 3 years after initial vaccination in children.
