Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Barycela (MG1111) is a live-attenuated varicella vaccine developed by GC Biopharma Corp to prevent infection by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the causative agent of chickenpox. It is derived from the proprietary MAV/06 strain, which was originally isolated from a Korean child and attenuated through serial passage in human diploid cells (MRC-5). Barycela was developed as a successor to GC Biopharma's earlier varicella vaccine, Suduvax, with improvements in manufacturing and stability. Clinical trials, including Phase III studies in children aged 12 months to 12 years, have demonstrated that Barycela is non-inferior to the global reference vaccine Varivax in terms of immunogenicity (seroconversion rates and antibody titers) and possesses a comparable safety profile. The vaccine is administered subcutaneously and is intended to provide long-term protection against varicella in pediatric populations.
