The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine is a live-attenuated viral vaccine designed to provide active immunity against chickenpox (varicella) and reduce the risk of herpes zoster (shingles). Most formulations utilize the Oka strain of VZV, which is attenuated through serial passage in cell culture. The vaccine stimulates both humoral (antibody) and cell-mediated immune responses. In the specific context of research conducted by The HIV Netherlands Australia Thailand Research Collaboration (HIV-NAT), this vaccine has been evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials to assess its safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy in HIV-infected children who are on stable antiretroviral therapy. This research is particularly significant as immunocompromised populations are at an increased risk for severe complications from primary VZV infection and viral reactivation.
