This investigational peptide vaccine, developed by Osaka University, is a combination immunotherapy designed to treat neovascular maculopathy, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The vaccine consists of two HLA-restricted epitope peptides targeting vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (VEGFR1) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), emulsified with the adjuvant Montanide ISA 51. Administered via subcutaneous injection, the therapy is designed to induce a cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response against cells expressing these receptors, such as the vascular endothelial cells involved in pathological ocular neovascularization. By targeting the receptors responsible for angiogenesis rather than the VEGF ligand itself, this approach aims to provide a long-lasting inhibitory effect on the progression of neovascular eye diseases.
