Overview

This is an investigational combination therapy consisting of verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, and magnesium sulfate, a neuroprotective agent with multiple mechanisms including NMDA receptor blockade. The therapy is being evaluated in the MAVARIC (Magnesium and Verapamil After Recanalization in Ischemia of the Cerebrum) trial for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). It is administered super-selectively via an intra-arterial catheter directly into the affected brain tissue immediately following successful mechanical thrombectomy. The combination aims to provide synergistic neuroprotection by addressing multiple pathways of ischemic brain injury, such as excitotoxicity and calcium-mediated cell death, during the critical period of reperfusion. The study is led by Dr. Justin Fraser at the University of Kentucky.
