Overview

Vibrio cholerae Inaba 6973 El Tor biotype, formalin inactivated is an oral vaccine containing whole cells of the V. cholerae O1 serogroup (specifically the Inaba Phil 6973 El Tor strain) that have been rendered non-infectious by treatment with formaldehyde. It is used for active immunization against cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae O1 and is typically administered as part of a multi-strain formulation alongside other V. cholerae strains such as Ogawa Cairo 50 and sometimes O139. The vaccine works by stimulating mucosal and systemic immune responses to key surface antigens of the bacterium, providing protection against infection and disease[4][5][8]. Formalin-inactivation preserves important heat-sensitive antigens like mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA), enhancing immunogenicity compared to phenol-inactivated vaccines[5][6]. The primary indication is prevention of epidemic or endemic cholera; efficacy has been demonstrated for both outbreak control and routine immunization programs[4][8].
