Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Viramidine + pegylated interferon alfa-2b** is a combination therapy investigated for chronic hepatitis C treatment. Viramidine (taribavirin hydrochloride) is a guanosine analog prodrug of ribavirin that is rapidly converted to ribavirin in vivo and is designed to reduce the risk of hemolytic anemia compared to ribavirin. Pegylated interferon alfa-2b is a recombinant type I interferon, pegylated to improve pharmacokinetics, that stimulates the innate antiviral immune response primarily through activation of the JAK/STAT pathway after binding to interferon alpha/beta receptors. The combination was evaluated in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials for hepatitis C virus (HCV), showing reduced anemia rates but failing non-inferiority efficacy endpoints versus standard ribavirin/PEG-IFN therapy. Both drugs act synergistically: viramidine inhibits HCV replication as ribavirin, and pegylated interferon alfa-2b induces broad immune activation against HCV[1][3][4][5].
