Virus-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (VSTs) are an investigational cell-based biologic therapy being studied for the treatment of viral infections in immunocompromised patients. This specific program, developed by the Western Sydney Local Health District, utilizes third-party donor-derived T-cells that are expanded ex vivo and selected based on HLA matching. The therapy is designed to reconstitute antiviral immunity against cytomegalovirus (CMV), adenovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in patients who have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and whose infections are persistent or refractory to standard antiviral medications. By adoptively transferring these specialized T-cells, the treatment aims to provide a targeted immune response to clear or control viral reactivation.
