Overview

Dikavirin is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product developed by Valenta Pharm, consisting of the antiviral agent vitaglutam (imidazolylethylamide of pentanedioic acid) and the hematopoietic stimulant dicarbamine (N,N'-bis[2-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)ethyl]malonamide). Vitaglutam exerts its antiviral effect by binding to the viral nucleoprotein (NP), which prevents the nuclear translocation of the viral ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex, thereby inhibiting viral replication. Dicarbamine is a stimulant of leukopoiesis, specifically granulocytopoiesis, traditionally used to mitigate chemotherapy-induced neutropenia by promoting the differentiation and proliferation of myeloid precursor cells in the bone marrow. The combination was specifically developed and approved in Russia in 2022 for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19, aiming to provide direct antiviral activity while supporting the host's hematopoietic and immune systems during infection.
