Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vitamin C + retinol is a topical combination of two well-established skincare actives—vitamin C (ascorbic acid or its derivatives) and retinol (a vitamin A derivative). This combination is primarily used in dermatology and cosmetic products to address signs of photoaging, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles, and overall skin texture. - **Vitamin C** acts as a potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals generated by UV exposure and pollution. It also inhibits melanin production (reducing dark spots), stimulates collagen synthesis for firmer skin, and has anti-inflammatory properties[3][7][8]. - **Retinol** increases cellular turnover, promotes collagen production, reduces the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles/acne/hyperpigmentation, and improves overall skin texture by accelerating the shedding of dead cells[3][7][8]. Both ingredients work via different mechanisms but have overlapping benefits for anti-aging and brightening. They are often recommended together in skincare routines but are rarely formulated together in a single stable product due to chemical incompatibility; instead they are typically applied at different times of day (vitamin C in the morning; retinol at night)[5][6][7]. The combination can cause irritation if not introduced gradually.
