Overview
The AREDS formulation is a specific combination of high-dose antioxidant vitamins and minerals developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) to reduce the risk of progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The standard daily dose consists of 500 mg of Vitamin C, 400 IU of Vitamin E, 15 mg of beta-carotene, 80 mg of zinc (as zinc oxide), and 2 mg of copper (as cupric oxide). In the landmark Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), this formulation demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in the risk of developing advanced AMD and associated vision loss in individuals with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in one eye. Due to the increased risk of lung cancer associated with beta-carotene in smokers, a successor formulation (AREDS 2) was later developed that replaced beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin.
