Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vitamin D + leucine-enriched whey protein is a muscle-targeted oral nutritional supplement (MT-ONS) developed by Nutricia Research (a division of Danone) for the management of sarcopenia in older adults. The formulation is specifically designed to stimulate muscle protein synthesis (MPS) by providing a high dose of high-quality whey protein (approximately 20g), a significant amount of the essential amino acid leucine (approximately 3g), and vitamin D3 (800 IU cholecalciferol). Leucine acts as a potent activator of the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway, which is the primary regulator of MPS. Vitamin D supports muscle function through its receptors (VDR) in skeletal muscle and addresses common deficiencies in the elderly. Clinical evidence from the PROVIDE study demonstrated that twice-daily consumption improves muscle mass and lower-extremity function in sarcopenic individuals, even in the absence of structured exercise.
