Overview
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and acyclovir are being evaluated in a Phase 4 randomized, single-blinded clinical trial conducted by Cairo University for the treatment of plantar warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble steroid prohormone that acts as an immunomodulator; it stimulates macrophages and cathelicidin production, inhibits cellular proliferation, and induces terminal differentiation. Acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue antiviral agent that selectively inhibits viral DNA replication. In this study context, both agents are administered via intralesional injection directly into the base of the warts to assess their comparative efficacy, safety, and recurrence rates.
