Overview
Vivotif + Dukoral + oats is an investigational combination therapy being evaluated by Haukeland University Hospital for the treatment of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. This novel immunomodulatory approach combines two established oral vaccines—Vivotif (a live-attenuated Salmonella Ty21a typhoid vaccine) and Dukoral (an inactivated whole-cell Vibrio cholerae vaccine with recombinant cholera toxin B subunit)—with a daily dietary supplement of oats. The therapeutic hypothesis is that the oral vaccines stimulate mucosal defense factors in the intestinal lining, while the dietary oats act as a prebiotic to modify the microbial environment in the intestinal lumen. Together, these components aim to restore the homeostatic balance between the host's natural defense mechanisms and the intestinal microbiota, which is typically disrupted in patients with ulcerative colitis.
