Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VO(dmpp)2, chemically known as bis(1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4-pyridinonato)oxovanadium(IV), is a preclinical-stage vanadium-based coordination complex being investigated as an oral insulin mimetic for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and hepatic steatosis. Developed by researchers at the University of Coimbra in collaboration with the Karolinska Institutet, the compound acts by enhancing glucose uptake in adipocytes and improving glucose tolerance. At the molecular level, VO(dmpp)2 stimulates the insulin signaling pathway by promoting the expression of insulin receptor substrate 2 (IRS2) and the phosphorylation of AKT, while reducing the expression of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), a negative regulator of insulin signaling.
