Overview
Voglibose + metformin is a combination therapy being investigated by the University of Zambia for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Voglibose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that functions by competitively inhibiting enzymes in the brush border of the small intestine, thereby delaying the hydrolysis of complex carbohydrates and reducing postprandial hyperglycemia. Metformin, a biguanide, complements this by decreasing hepatic gluconeogenesis, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This combination is specifically being studied in the Zambian population to compare its glycemic and cardiovascular outcomes against the combination of glibenclamide and metformin in patients inadequately controlled on metformin monotherapy.
