Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Voltaren MAX is a high-concentration topical analgesic gel containing 2.32% diclofenac diethylamine, specifically formulated for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and acute soft tissue injuries. Developed by Haleon, this formulation is designed to provide localized relief with a prolonged duration of action, typically allowing for twice-daily (every 12 hours) application. As a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), diclofenac works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. The gel's specialized Emulgel technology facilitates the penetration of the active ingredient through the skin into the underlying tissues and synovial fluid. This topical delivery method achieves therapeutic concentrations at the site of pain while maintaining low systemic absorption, which significantly reduces the risk of systemic side effects such as gastrointestinal irritation or cardiovascular events compared to oral NSAID therapy.
