Drug intelligence / Profile preview
VSL#3 + inulin is a synbiotic combination consisting of the high-potency probiotic formulation VSL#3 and the prebiotic fiber inulin. VSL#3 is a proprietary blend of eight live bacterial strains, including species of *Lactobacillus*, *Bifidobacterium*, and *Streptococcus*. Inulin is a fructan-type polysaccharide that serves as a fermentable substrate to promote the growth of beneficial gut microbiota. This combination was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial led by Radboud University Medical Center to determine its efficacy in preventing adenoma development in the ileal pouch of patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) who have undergone ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). The treatment aims to modulate the luminal environment, enhance detoxification capacity, and reduce mucosal cell proliferation, potentially interrupting the adenoma-carcinoma sequence in the pouch.
