WecA inhibitor (Prokaryotics) is a preclinical-stage small molecule antibiotic candidate developed by Prokaryotics, Inc. It targets the bacterial enzyme WecA (UDP-N-acetylglucosamine--undecaprenyl-phosphate N-acetylglucosaminephosphotransferase), which is essential for the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell envelope. WecA is involved in the initiation of the assembly of various cell wall components, including O-antigen and Enterobacterial Common Antigen (ECA). By inhibiting this enzyme, the drug disrupts bacterial cell wall assembly and integrity, representing a novel approach to treating serious multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. The program has received SBIR funding and is currently in the lead optimization or preclinical development phase.
